I've been to Squid Row twice with sis, and always considered as one of the best places to relax on a Friday night. This time, I decided to take J and Emily to this laid back restaurant on symonds street.

One of reasons why i admire this restaurant is because of its high ceilings with white wall paint and the casual atmosphere. We walked in in the early evening but the restaurant was already full! Such a popular place for happy hour!
The tapas plate , as expected came in a big platter with tiger prawns, slipper lobster, fresh oysters, mussels, salt and pepper squid and tempura prawns. It is probably not the best bargain but i wanted to order something that could suit everyone's taste. Salt and pepper squid was still my favourite of the bunch. I could taste the spices that were added on top of it, but couldn't exactly tell what it was.
The past two times that i was here i ordered the Marlborough Salmon fillet on Salad with Mango vinaigrette . This time, I was prepared to be amazed by the freshness of the ingredients more than the seasoning. So i got the Market fish. The proportion of potatoes and fish were a little overwhelming at first glance. But i was happy enough to carefully taste the tarakihi fillets.
Overall, We were happy with our mains. I was most amazed by sis' Tuna Nicoise. The tuna medallions were cooked to medium rare . It was well seared on the outside, but still raw inside. The sides made the plate complete.
To top it off, J ordered a flat white, a new habit of his. I conveniently ordered 2 desserts to share. I appreciate the plating and the nautical inspired decor. This place is perfect for those who wants to escape to the beach and enjoy freshly caught seafood, Squid Row does just that.
